Great way to store water for long term storage. Add in some water storage chemicals.

the advantage of these water containers is that that are not so heavy that you cannot lift them.(5 gallons) I know someone who has water from 1999.. the barrels are huge and heavy and they just keep putting changing the water out. What would you do if the lights went out?

if you believe that you may need a gun for your bugout kit then here are some ideas.

If you know you are going to be in a gunfight, you don't take a pistol you take a rifle. Actually you take a rifle but you take a pistol as backup if the rifle fails or you run out of ammo.

AR-15 style rifle -- advantage is that it is a "good guy" gun and our military uses it. It is accurate but needs to be cleaned and maintained to function reliably. Lots of people in the US have this gun.

Ak-47 -- this gun is reliable and is reliable even when you don't clean it much or treat it badly or get it all dirty. Isn't the most accurate, but may be more accurate than you are when shooting for your life. You won't be able to make it into a sniper rifle though.

As for an Ak-47 go ahead and buy the best.

Lots of people make AR-15 style rifles.

Folding stocks on either rifle are worth it if bugging out in a vehicle are involved. Folding stocks were invented for getting in and out of vehicles with rifles.

Pistols

Revolvers are more reliable and simple for people that are "not into guns"
they are slower to reload for most.

Automatics are better for people "into guns"

.38 special, 9mm, and .45 are good calibers for two legged snakes.

A .22 pistol is great for the bugout bag for shooting at some food you might find during your bugout or after. In one of my bugout bags I have a Henry Survival Rifle in .22. Very compact, light and the rifle barrel fits into the buttstock.

shotguns are good if you can carry it. With a slug you can reach out to 100 yards and buckshot is great for close encounters. Put birdshot in there and you can hunt small game. It has been said if you could only have one gun it should be a shotgun.

To all the idiots out there that think that they are going to scare someone away by the sound of their shotgun chambering a round, all I can say is that I for one would say that anyone with any brains will immediately shoot toward the direction of that sound.

So saturday I went shooting at the range..

All I had to do was grab the gun and my "gun bag" with the ammo and the ak sight adjuster and leave.

got hungry and pulled some canned chicken out of the trunk and ate it and had some Perier...(it is hot in Texas so water in bottles lasts better in the heat than plastic).

Then I went to check up on my possible bug out location. I went and walked around for an hour or so and got all sweaty. So before I left I pulled out of the trunk a new pair of shorts and a shirt and left feeling refreshed.

I could have had a little cook out and slept out there as well since I have a bugout bag and other bug out items in the car.

Kind of cool, I could just take off anytime I want and just do whatever I want. No need to pack a bunch of stuff.. you stay permanently packed.

One Second After

I have no gas in the home, stove and microwave are all electric. So if the power goes out, there is no cooking going on. (being prepared doesn't always mean end of the world scenarios, just a silly storm could shut you down if you aren't a little prepared.

Anyway tonite I took a new Coleman Powerpack Single-Burner Low Profile Stove
, attached the adapter to hook it up to a big propone tank that I had disconnected from my outdoor grill and cooked some bacon and beans. It also works with the 16 oz disposable propane cylinders.

It sounded like it was leaking a little gas on the propane tank side but it was windy and heck it came with a 6 foot hose, so I just set up the stove 6 feet away from the tank, turned it on and lit the stove with a match(yep, gotta have that too..)

Cooked the beans fine. The bean came from a regular size can, and fit the skillet just perfect. It was pretty windy, a wood fire would have been really, really hard to work with. The wind didn't bother it much at all. Anyway, so it works just dandy. It also works with the small propane tanks as well so you could take it in the trunk of the car. Too big for a bugout bag though.

So I would use this to cook in the backyard or maybe put it in the fireplace and cook there and open a vent if you didn't want hungry neighbors bugging you from over the fence. You have to been careful indoors though. If you didnt have a fire place or way to have some airflow you wouldn't want to use it indoors at all. Not even positive if the fireplace would provide enough air.
But for sure don't use it indoors if you don't have air coming in from outside since carbon monoxide can kill you... sneaks up on you and puts you to sleep. Open a window on each side of the house or something until we can get an expert to tell us if the fireplace vent open would be enought or not.

If that coffepot works like a normal one too I might have to get it.

Best food to store at the bugout location or home

Mountain House freeze dried food in the big #10 cans keeps for 30 years and tastes good. Some of the other freeze dried food tastes pretty bad.

They sell stuff like spagetti but they also sell vegetables, and even scrambled eggs or just beef or just chicken.

It is not expensive compared to a fast food store, but if you can't afford it or want to supplement it with cheaper food, buy a huge bag of rice and an huge bag of beans.

Kroger is now selling 25 pounds of rice and 25 pounds of beans for around $15.... I wonder why?
Good timing whatever the reason. Buy some good freeze dried food and supplement it with beans and rice. Don't forget to store water and have ways to purify water though.. you need water to eat any of those...

bad radio for bug out location

It sounds good when you read the specs below, but it feels really cheap. The radio I got cost about $60 at radio shack. The one I got would not tune to AM or FM. The dial only took it to shortwave and weather channels, on which I heard nothing. It just feels cheap as well. Stay away from this radio, I am removing it from the bug out guy store.

this movie with elizabeth shue is based on power going out in a small
town in the USA.

it illustrates very realisticlly the types of problems that can pop up
quickly once the power goes out.

this movie is very realistic and not a movie that is overblown and
over the top. the power went out is all but it illustrates problems
that pop up as in how do you know what is happening when you don't
have power to turn on the radio and tv...how do you get a prescription
for yor baby when the computer at the pharmacy is down.. how do you
buy things when the ATM and credit card machines are down.. won't the
grocery store close down if they can't ring up your grocerirpes with
their scanner?

they eventually bug out but they don't do so war. if you find total
disaster or nuclear emergency movies too hard to swallow then this
movie is one you can imagine happening to you and get you thinking
about being prepared

5 rifles and no food or water

I live in Texas. In Texas almost everyone has guns.

The problem with that is that everyone has guns, but very few have stored food or water for emergencies. If you have food and water, there is little reason to poke your head outside.

If you don't have food and water, but have 5 guns, then you are part of the problem. You are going to be a bunch of you guys with more guns than brains all trying to get food and water from somewhere, somehow. That is dangerous for you and for everyone else.

Be a smart guy, get your guns but also store food and water so you won't have to venture out in search of food or water-- because what happens when you and someone else who has more guns than food run into each other? You might both be suspicious of someone carrying guns and walking about, it could get ugly with two good guys suspicious of the other one.

Get guns but go ahead and store food and water, that way you don't have to go out where a bunch of guys with more guns than brains are looking for food an water.

At least here in Texas, having guns just puts you on par with everyone

else. It is not like you have an advantage, you are not the only one armed and some of those guys are better trained and have more buddies than you do. Get the water and food so you can just stay inside where is mostly safe. At least if someone comes kicking in your door you will at least feel good you are shooting a bad guy. Outside, you might not know if you are shooting at a good guy or a bad guy. And also since legally, someone kicking in your door you have a right to shoot at, just two guys getting nervous and shooting at each other could be murder either way you want to look at it.

All this being said.. wouldn't it be better to bug out, out of the city where there are so many people and so little food? People are the most dangerous animals on the planet and the more people and less food in any area, the more dangerous it is.Get out of the city, less people is better.

Carbine Class

I recently took a carbine class to learn how to shoot one of those evil "assault rifles." (true assault rifles are not single shot rifles they are fully automatic or shoot more than one shot at one time, so this is just more nonsense from reporters who don't know what they are talking about.. or politicians) So I was shooting a semi-automatic rifle. I digress.

Anyway the training was very good, and I worked out some issues related to quickly reloading, safely handling the rifle around others and doing immediate action drills when the rifle jams. We did alot of timed quick shooting at targets from many distances. Oh, and we also did some drills of transitioning to a pistol if and when the rifle has problems.

I recommend training to anyone of any skill level. There is nothing like group training and doing drills under supervision in a timed drill. And I stress whatever your skill level.... It is just usefull whether you are clueless or super advanced.

your home is your castle

What you really need to do is leave town... but you can harden your home a little very easily.

I recently had a handyman come out and install longer screws in the doors, in the hinge and also the bolt plate. The screws that were originally put in there when the house was built were a joke. Now the longer screws go deep in the boards that are part of the frame of the house. Kicking in the doors will be much harder now.

I hear that people prefer to kick in doors since the sound is something that can be ignored by neighbors. Breaking glass however is something people take note of and investigate.

Anyway, it was quick and easy and something good to do. Buying locking gas caps for the care also a quick and easy idea. As thing get tough, the people will ramp up on thieving.

Dow Jones is not indicator of much

The dow jones industrial average, what some people call the "stock
market", as in the market is at 7000 is
is computed from the stock prices of 30 of the largest and most widely
held public companies in the United States.

This is based in dollars...and since the dollar is fiat currency whose
value is only value in terms of it's value to other fiat currencies
then it make the Dow very hard to compare to other times in history.

So for example, since the dollar has lost 40 percent of its value in
current history, saying that the Dow is at a level now that it was say
in 1997 doesn't mean much since dollars in 1997 were worth more than
they are today.

So right now the stock market is very low, but in real terms of value
it is worth even less if you put in the loss of the value of a dollar.

So, once the market is back to 14,000 or so close to its all time
high... well when that happens, by then there will exist trillions and
trillions of dollars more than the last time we were at 14,000, so Dow
14,000 will really be more like Dow 8,000.

So anything valued in dollars is really deceiving since the value of
the dollar varies because of many things, one thing being supply and
demand. The more dollars we create in bailout or stimulus, the less
the dollar is worth. Remember your father or grandfather saying they
could buy a Coke for 5 cents? That show you how deceiving it is to
compare things over time on the basis of of dollars. Did the price of
a coke really increase from 5 cents to a dollar? Or is the dollar
simply worth less.

Worthless.

SOG PowerLock Multi Tool Review

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a wilderness survival class.
The class rules limited what was allowed to be brought from a gear/
tools perspective. The gear was limited to a multitool and/ or a
pocket knife. Before attending the course, a friend of mine
recommended to me that I purchase a multitool with a good saw if
possible. So I shopped around and found the multitool that I would
settle with; the SOG Paratool. It came highly recommended to me from a
few other owners. The cross-cut saw was a deal sealer for me. As I
went through the class It became evident that my purchase was a good
one. from sawing down trees to build shelter, to using it as a
makeshift fish scaler, the Paratool very much proved its worth. I was
able to build a stronger shelter because I was able to saw down larger
plants/trees for support. I was amazed that after a good two days of
extensive sawing, the blade never lost its edge. I now keep one in
each glove compartment of my vehicles. You never know when you might
need a tool such as this.It could be very handy during an emergency on
a long road trip. I highly recommend this product!!!!

Advice from a reader

I used to be really big into the outdoors and I was somewhat of a gear
head. The stove you have pictured, Jetboil, is an awesome stove. MSR
(Mountain Safety Research) just came out with their version of this
stove. It is a little more efficient when it comes to fuel vs weight,
but unfortunately not as versatile as the Jetboil. As for what is the
heaviest item in you pack?...hands down water. Nothing (and I mean
nothing) weighs more than water (not even ammunition). SOG makes a good
utility knife, but Leatherman has been making those knives for years, so
you can never go wrong with a Leatherman. As for sleeping bags, people
always argue down vs synthetic. People say down b/c it is warmer for
its weight (and packs much smaller). Others say synthetic because it is
warm when it gets wet. My answer...sleep in a wet synthetic sleeping
bag and tell me how warm your chestnuts are. Down all the way!!! Check
out a sleeping bag called the Rock Wren (or Winter Wren, depending on
the warmth you need) by Feathered Friends. That bag has multiple uses
and I think that is key for every single item that goes into your
backpack. You must ask yourself this question: do I NEED it or do I
WANT it?

We once made a gravity filter, which is an easy way to purify water. I
will try to find the instructions on how we did that.

There are so many backpacks to choose from these days. If money is no
object, buy a Mystery Ranch. Mystery Ranch packs are made in the USA
for the military (they do have a commercial line). You can NOT go wrong
with these packs. I don't know if you know this website, but look at
militarymorons.com. They review military gear and the site master does
an excellent job reviewing each item.

At the end of the day, the stuff I listed is expensive but it works. If
you are making a B.O.B., then the stuff you have in it (and what is
carrying your stuff) had better work and be ready to take some serious
abuse. Last thing you want is your backpack to bust out (had it
happen), your water bag/bottle to break (been there), or your purifier
to crap out and you end up getting giardia (yup, been there too).
