>all 4x ACOGs have very short eye relief.>As previously stated the TA11 3.5x models are much more forgiving. Maybe I need a non BAC model. Can I shoot with both eyes open well?
The TA11 ACOG has more eye relief and requires less precise eye placement to obtain a sight picture compared to the TA31 ACOG in use by the US Military.  Just check the specs for eye relief.

The Effects of Phoria When Using the ACOG as an Occluded-Eye Gunsight
(who the hell cares about this? WTF? they are talking about  closing the cover of the scope and still trying to use it??!!!!)

Phoria: the visual effect that occurs when one eye is blocked from seeing the same view of a target as the other eye; the blocked eye does not get the same sensory input as the other eye and can begin to wonder off, usually to one side or the other.

Leupold

Mark 4 4x24mm HAMR
seems like made for AR platform
it has batteries-- batteries are stupid on guns
4x for mid range and dot for CQB- two different check weld positions?

MARK 4 CQ/T RIFLESCOPES
Mark 4 1-3x14mm CQ/T
http://www.leupold.com/tactical/products/scopes/mark-4-cqt-riflescopes/mark-4-1-3x14mm-cqt/
it has batteries-- but reticle is still visible without batteries or turned off.
No BDC- actually some reticle options do...
Common AA batteries power the CQ/T for more than 600 hours at medium setting
The Mark 4 CQ/T also has range-estimating capabilities. Aside from the standard dot, this has an outer circle. This is the key for range estimation. A 6' target will fit snug inside the circle at 100 yards. At 200 yards the 6 ft. target will fit inbetween the center dot and the circle.

can it take a beating?

Aimpoint with 3x magnifier?
battery life of 50,000 is about 5 years by my calculations... that might work..

DAMN GOOD article here on scopes

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/60930346-1.html

Specs I like:

BCM - bullet compensation hold over marks for .308
rangefinding - such as 19 inch marks at different ranges to calculate range based off width of shoulders
True 1x for close quarters and or IDPA 3 gun
Toughness
Illumnation
illumination without batteries
at least up to 4x and maybe even higher. 6 would probably be enough for shooting but then again..I am not going to carry binoculars, so a higher magnification is good for identification.

Types of combat optics

red dot
- aimpoint
- Eotech
- trijicon reflex
- mepro
magnified fixed
magnified variable

UPDATE: And the winner is.....

Trijicon ACOG TA11E

Why did it win?
No batteries.
Has BAC, and ability to see sights in low light.
range finding ability
BDC holdover marks out to 800 yards

Terms

DMR- designated marksman rifleman, not quite a sniper, but mid range rifle work.
BDC - bullet drop compensation marks, showing you the holdover points at different ranges
OPSEC- something pussies fret over, get over it they know EVERYTHING already
BAC - Bindon Aiming Concept

Acog TA11 range finding
zero the tip of the chevron at 100m
inside of the chevron will be on at 200m
post below the chevron will be on at 300m
cross hairs the width of an E-silhouette (19" which is close to human torso width) at 400m, 500m, 600m, 700m, 800m

Put the crosshair that  matches the width of the silhouette on the target and pull the trigger. done.

the FAL wasn't quite accurate enough... How about a tack driving AR-10? Well at least 1 MOA...
Rock River Arms LAR-8 standard

maybe magnification is better.. mmm....

800 hundred yards is far enough right?

what is the difference between the Leupold Mark 4s and the Leupold AR scopes? The AR scopes are cheaper but what is missing?

Interesting thought:

Through your scope an object at 500 yds at 9x it would appear to be 55.5 yds away...
